The cemetery was donated to the Township in 1805 by Thomas Frederick, my 4th Great-Grandfather. It is currently in a state of ill repair, as illustrated by the following photographs.

| Yours truly, Sept. 1995, pointing to the graves of Thomas Frederick (1751-1808), Revolutionary War Veteran, and his wife, Ann Margaret Tibbens (1754-1826). These are my fourth great-grand parents. | The broken stone is that of Ann Margaret Tibbens. Vandals have stepped on it and have carved initials on some of the stones in the cemetery. | This is the stone of Samuel Frederick (1792-1844), tenth child of Thomas and Ann Margaret. He was a War of 1812 Veteran. The stone is broken over (you are looking straight down on it), and cracked in several spots. Photo taken Sept. 1994. | I am standing next to three upright stones; the marker on the right, and the one I am standing next to are cracked, and were once knocked over; someone has stood them back up. The stone on the right is John Frederick (1788-1864), War of 1812 Veteran, and sixth child of Thomas and Ann Margaret. The center is Johns wife, Sophia Charlotte Gloss (Von de Gloss) (1790-1863). The stone on the left belongs to Henry J. S. Frederick (abt 1830-1852) Photo taken Sept. 1995. |
The cemetery should have been maintained by the Township Trustees, but like many remotely located cemeteries, "Out-of-Site", "Out-of-Mind", is the rule. This cemetery is surrounded by many acres of farm land, and there aren't any known Frederick family members living in the area. I am not sure when maintenance was discontinued on the cemetery. One clue is that a documentation was done on Columbiana Co. cemeteries in 1977, and the Frederick Cemetery was inventoried at that time. The volunteer indicated that the cemetery was in a sorry state at that time.
As many of you may be aware, Centre Twp. is not a very wealthy community. That is to say, the Trustees', most likely, will not put up a lot of money for this restoration project. I suspect that they may donate some type of service-in-kind, such as surveying the cemetery, and the right-of-way that leads to it; at least this is what I intend on asking of them. I was advised that they do not have a cemetery fund.
In the near future I will post a timeline of project tasks. This will give all of you an appreciation for the work ahead of us and also give you an opportunity to give me some feedback on my ideas. (I don't claim to be the all knowing expert)
Please bear with me as I get this project organized.
